Scalp Psoriasis

What Is Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is the common plaque psoriasis appearing anywhere on the scalp.  It can range from a single spot to multiple patches and can also cover the entire area of the scalp.  In some cases it will protrude out onto the top of the forehead, behind the ears and onto the back of the neck.  It has the same reddish inflamed skin covered with the silver, white patches or scales that break off to give an appearance of dandruff.

Approximately fifty percent of people suffering from plaque psoriasis will experience at least one outbreak on their scalp during times of a flare up.  It is also common to experience small individual patches appearing from time to time.

It is often mistaken with a similar skin condition called seborrhea dermatitis; both have similar symptoms and indications and also use similar treatments.  Generally the dermatitis appears to react significantly more quickly to treatment compared to the psoriasis.

Symptoms And Indications Of Scalp Psoriasis

•    Inflamed red patches of skin
•    Covered with silver, white scales or flakes
•    Dandruff type indications due to shredding of skin flakes
•    Dry skin that cracks and will bleed easily
•    Light to sever itching
•    Possible burning sensation
•    Soreness
•    Temporary alopecia (medical hair loss)

While the symptoms for seborrhea dermatitis are similar they can be distinguished due to a yellowish color of the flakes and the attachment to the hair shaft.  The skin also has a greasy appearance in contrast to the dry looking skin of psoriasis.

Treatment For Scalp Psoriasis

•    Medicated shampoos: Coal Tar and Zinc Based, also salicylic acid.
•    Topical Solutions: Creams, Ointments, Tar products, Vitamin D, Topical Steroids
•    Light Therapy

As with all types of psoriasis, problems of embarrassment leading to stress and anxiety are common with those who suffer from this disease.  In this case the unsightly appearance is visible to others especially if hair loss has been experienced.

Once again I cannot state the importance of conducting as much research as possible as each individual will react differently to any one single psoiasis treament.  It is therefore paramount that you search extensively in order to find you psoriasis cure.

It has been found that this condition is not a long term problem when successfully diagnosed and treated.  Dermatologists state that scalp psoriasis when treated correctly should not remain for any length of time.
