Psoriasis Symptoms


Psoriasis Symptoms appear in many different forms depending on the actual type contracted and will vary from person to person.  They generally appear in patches ranging from small dandruff like spots to major flare-ups covering large portions of the body.  Typically though it appears in patches of thick red skin with silver white scales and although it can appear on any part of the body it generally forms on the elbows, knees and scalp.

Approximately eighty percent of those affected by psoriasis have the plaque type which is also known as the vulgaris type.

How To Recognize Psoriasis Symptoms

 

Plaque Psoriasis


•    Thick patches of red skin covered with silver white scales or flakes, very dry in appearance.
•    Start as small red spots or bumps then grow into thicker patches
•    Patches can grow together to cover large areas of skin
•    Generally found on the elbows, knees and scalp
•    Sometimes itchy or painful, can crack and bleeds easily if knocked

Psoriasis Guttate


•    Appears as water droplet size spots that are red in color and covered by a thin fine scale
•    Mostly form on the arms, legs and body trunk and occasionally on the scalp and face
•    Usually occurs in younger people ranging from young children to adults up to thirty years of age
•    Usually occurs after an episode of strep throat, a respitory infection or from certain medications

Pustular Psoriasis – Localized


•    Occurs only in specific localized areas such as the palms of hands or soles of the feet
•    Inflamed red skin with pus filled blisters

Pustular Psoriasis – Generalized


•    A very dangerous life threatening condition requiring hospitalization
•    Large areas of skin which are bright red, swollen and containing white pus filled blisters

Inverse Psoriasis


•    Red smooth inflamed skin patches occurring in the folds of the skin, normally around the genital and buttock region and below the breasts
•    The area becomes very tender and often painful

Erythrodermic Psoriasis


•    Also a very dangerous condition as the skin loses its normal protective functions
•    Large areas of skin covering most of the body become red and burnt looking, resulting in large areas of skin peeling off
•    Severe pain and itching

Scalp Psoriasis


•    Smaller plaque type lesions on the scalp having dandruff type appearances

Nail Psoriasis


•    Generally a ridging type or pitting effect on the toenails and fingernails
