The Four ‘S’s of Anti-Wrinkle Skin Defense
Anti wrinkle skin defense is based largely on taking control of your lifestyle and habits. Yes, aging is inevitable, but how you take care of your skin will influence its look later in life. Much like teen acne during our adolescent years, aging skin is a condition we must deal with as we grow older.
There are four rules of thumb to remember, which can be characterized by the four ‘S’s of anti wrinkle skin defense: sun, smoking, sleep, and stress. Here, we take an in-depth look at each of these factors.
Sun
The sun is beneficial to human beings in a number of ways. Without the sun, the body is unable to effectively process Vitamin D. But the sun can also be very damaging, particularly to the skin.
Repeated exposure to the sun’s rays damages your skin permanently. There is a point when unprotected skin can no longer repair itself. This ‘photoaging’ shows up in the form of freckles, age spots, loose, rough, or leathery skin, mottled complexion and wrinkles that no amount of anti wrinkle cream can help.
The degree to which the sun damages skin is dependent on the amount of pigment present, i.e. those people with fair skin are far more susceptible than those with a darker skin tone. The worst consequence of overexposure to the sun’s rays is the possibility of developing cancer.
The best anti-wrinkle defense is to always wear a sunscreen, no matter the weather. Certainly there is no way you can avoid sun exposure, but you can limit your time out in the sun, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Even in the summer, consider wearing clothing that covers up your skin as much as possible and add a broad-brimmed hat to your ensemble.
Smoking
Most people recognize that smoking is one of the worst things you can do to your body. But did you know that it also contributes to aging skin? One of the most obvious signs of a life-long smoker is their leathery, wrinkled skin. Not only that, but the various toxins present in cigarettes can also contribute to the poor condition of your skin.
The best anti wrinkle defense is to stop smoking, now.
Sleep
Have you ever noticed the difference in your face after a poor night’s sleep? Bags and dark circles under your eyes and sagging that makes the appearance of eye wrinkles more pronounced are just some of the effects of getting too little sleep.
Your anti wrinkle defense system should include steps to get a full night’s sleep, every night, so you can wake up feeling refreshed in the morning – and your skin will look its best.
Stress
You can blame stress for a lot of maladies. You may be surprised to know that it can also contribute to the condition of your skin. Think about it – when you form a facial expression over and over again, it will eventually form lines. Even though laugh lines are a sign of good humor, they do not look good on your face. And lines from frowning are even worse.
You must learn to relax as part of your anti wrinkle regimen. Try meditation or yoga exercises to whisk away the stresses of everyday life.
